Vienna
Grinzing - Grinzing is a famous village in
the 18th District of Vienna. It is a wine-making area
and the village has become famous for its taverns
and beer houses. Many of the taverns serve food and
drink; the waiters and waitresses wear traditional
dress, and of course there is music-making and singing.
There is a small Museum in Grinzing
showing the history of wine-making in the area. The
village also has a lovely gothic Church and many of
the houses are well preserved making this a very picturesque
location. Take a stroll around the Grinzing before
settling down to the eating and drinking.
One way to get to Grinzing is to
take the 38 tram (the 38 tram starts at Schottentor
Universitat on The Ring). This journey takes about
40 soothing minutes as the tram meanders out of Vienna
through the suburbs and up to Grinzing (which is quite
high in the hills). The trip provides an alternative
view of Vienna to the city centre sights. When you
arrive in Grinzing you are rested and ready to go
with a beer or glass of wine.
The Heurigen (taverns) of Grinzing
vary from peaceful olde world ones to others which
are downright rowdy – take your pick.
At the winemaking season some taverns will sell their
new wine – Heuriger – this is indicated
by hanging out a pine branch.
