Vienna
Hundertwasserhaus - This part of a sightseeing
trip is great fun after the heavy culture of the Imperial
Palaces, Art Galleries, etc. Hundertwasserhaus is
a small housing complex in Kegelgasses and was designed
by the architect Hundertwasser and is now occupied
by residents of Vienna.
Hundertwasserhaus dates from 1985
and was intended to be a small housing project for
the Vienna City Council. Since then, it has grown
a complete tourist industry of its own and is one
of the most visited sites in Vienna and attracts tourists
of all ages.
Go and marvel at the colour schemes, the dome like
an onion, the trees growing out at higher floor levels,
the connecting links, the lack of parallel straight
lines on the exterior decoration of the building,
etc. You have never seen anything like it.
To cater for the influx of tourists an Interpretative
Centre has been set up with all types of
souvenir and other shops (just across the road). There
you can get mementos of Hundertwasserhaus and your
trip to Vienna - from tee-shirts to beautiful gold
jewellery. There is also a fun toilet in this building
– for a small fee.
